Wire Wheel Cleaning & Care Guide

Wire wheels look their best when brake dust, road film and cleaner residue are removed from the tight spaces between spokes. The key is frequent, gentle cleaning rather than waiting for heavy buildup.

What you need

  • Wheel-safe cleaner appropriate for your wheel finish
  • Soft wash media for the face of the wheel
  • A narrow or cone-shaped spoke brush for tight areas
  • Clean rinse water
  • Soft drying towels or filtered air

1. Work on a cool wheel

Avoid applying cleaner to a hot wheel. Heat can make products dry too quickly and can increase the chance of spotting or staining.

2. Rinse loose dirt first

Remove loose grit before brushing. This reduces the amount of abrasive material being moved across the finish.

3. Use a spoke brush for deep areas

A tapered brush can reach between closely spaced spokes and around the inner barrel where larger wash mitts cannot. Use light pressure and keep the brush wet.

4. Do not let cleaner dry

Follow the cleaner manufacturer’s instructions and rinse thoroughly. If you are unsure whether a cleaner is safe for chrome, gold-plated, painted, polished or other custom finishes, test it first or ask the wheel manufacturer.

5. Dry the wheel

Drying helps reduce water spots and makes it easier to inspect the spokes for missed residue.

For custom and plated finishes

Always follow the wheel manufacturer’s care instructions. Strong acids, harsh alkaline cleaners, abrasive pads and automatic car-wash chemicals can be inappropriate for some finishes.
